When you drive along the Eastern freeway in Melbourne at dusk you can see fruit bats overhead making their way out each night. I used to drive along this freeway from the city to my parents place during a rough time with my girlfriend and the bats felt symbolic somehow. This song is about deciding not to shut down in a relationship when it gets hard and wishing the other person could read your mixed signals and be there for you in the way you’re being really terrible at communicating you want
lyrics
didn’t want to tell you not to
help me just like that
didn’t want to hear you wonder,
listen to you ask
now i’m hoping you call me over
and say it one more time
what’s wrong, i’m here, breath slow,
i’m all ears
didn’t want to feel it falter,
leave or just react
didn’t want to tell you something
i couldn’t take back
now i’m hoping you call me over
and say it one more time
what’s wrong, i’m here, breath slow
i’m all ears
bats over the eastern free way
i’m heading home they’re heading here
bats over the eastern freeway
i’m lying low they’re flying near
didn’t want to do what I’ve done
so many times
didn’t want to lose an opportunity
this nice
and now i’m hoping you call me over
and say it one more time
what’s wrong, i’m here, breath slow,
I’m all ears
bats over the eastern free way
i’m heading home they’re heading here
bats over the eastern freeway
i’m lying low they’re flying near
bats over the eastern freeway
i know it’s easy when it’s dark
bats over the eastern free way
i’m coming home lets make this hard
